Can Ultrasound Weld Metal? What Are The Ways To Weld It?

Jul 29, 2023

Ultrasonic waves can weld metal. Common metal ultrasonic welding can be divided into spot welding, ring welding, seam welding, and wire welding.
1. Spot welding. The vibration system of spot welding machines can be divided into longitudinal vibration (light structure) system, bending vibration (heavy structure) system, and light bending vibration system based on the vibration status of the upper sound rod. Light structure is suitable for small spot welding machines with power less than 500W, heavy structure is suitable for kilowatt high-power welding machines, and light bending vibration system is suitable for medium and small power welding machines. Both have the advantages of both vibration systems.

2. Circular welding. The ring welding method can form a closed weld at one time, and the Torsional vibration system is adopted. During the welding process, the vibration amplitude exhibits a symmetrical linear relationship with respect to the axis of the sound wave rod, with zero amplitude in the axial zone and the maximum amplitude at the edge of the welding pad. Obviously, circular soldering is the most suitable packaging process for microelectronic devices.

3. Wire welding. Wire welding can be seen as an extension of spot welding methods. This method involves obtaining a 150mm long linear weld through a linear upper sound electrode. This method is suitable for linear sealing of foil.

4. Seam welding. The vibration system of a seam welding machine can be divided into:;
A - Longitudinal vibration system;
B - bending vibration system;
C - Torsional vibration system.
Among them, a and b are more commonly used. The vibration direction of the welding pad is perpendicular to the welding direction. The vibration direction of c is parallel to the welding direction. Seam welding can obtain a sealed continuous weld seam. Usually, the workpiece is clamped between the upper and lower pads. In special circumstances, a flat bottom sound electrode can be used.
