What is an ultrasonic horn?

Ultrasonic horn is an important part of the ultrasonic vibration welding system. Its main function in the vibration system is to amplify the particle displacement or velocity of mechanical vibration and concentrate the ultrasonic energy on a small area, that is, energy accumulation. Therefore, it is also called ultrasonic gear lever or ultrasonic energy concentrator. The ultrasonic welder horn is a passive component, which does not produce vibration. It only changes the amplitude of the vibration input by the ultrasonic transducer and then transmits it, completing the impedance transformation.

As the name suggests, the ultrasonic horn (ultrasonic welding horn) is a functional component that cooperates with the ultrasonic transducer to change the ultrasonic vibration amplitude. Its main function is to change the amplitude of the transducer (generally increase), improve the vibration speed ratio, improve the efficiency, improve the mechanical quality factor, strengthen the heat resistance, expand the temperature range, and extend the service life of the transducer. The ultrasonic transducer adjusts the load matching between the transducer and the ultrasonic tool head by installing the horn (ultrasonic horn), reduces the resonant impedance, makes it work at the resonant frequency, improves the electroacoustic conversion efficiency, effectively reduces the heating capacity of the ultrasonic transducer, and improves the service life.

According to the vibration type, it can be divided into longitudinal vibration, torsional vibration, flexural vibration and composite vibration (longitudinal bending, longitudinal torsion, flexural torsion). In the processing and application of power ultrasonic, longitudinal mode is the most common.
