Doubled Extraction Efficiency, Slashed Costs: How is Ultrasonic Technology Unleashing Massive Benefits for the Chinese Herbal Medicine Industry?

Nov 10, 2025

Ultrasonic extraction is a novel method and process for obtaining active ingredients from herbal materials, representing a complete departure from traditional techniques like decoction and alcohol precipitation. Compared to these conventional methods, ultrasonic extraction offers several outstanding advantages:
(1) No High Temperatures Required: Operating at temperatures of 40°C–50°C, it avoids the high heat of boiling water, thus preserving thermosensitive active compounds that are prone to hydrolysis or oxidation. Ultrasound also disrupts plant cell walls, enhancing the efficacy of the medicine.

(2) Ambient Pressure Operation: The process is simple to perform and easy to maintain.

(3) High Extraction Efficiency: An optimal yield can be achieved in just 20–40 minutes-merely a third of the time required by decoction or alcohol precipitation, or even less. Extraction is more thorough, yielding over twice the amount of extract compared to traditional methods. Ultrasonication is highly efficient at 65–70°C, a temperature range that generally does not damage the active components of herbs. At around 65°C with ultrasonication, extraction completes in about 40 minutes, compared to the 2–3 hours typically needed for decoction.

(4) Broad Applicability: The technique is versatile and suitable for extracting a wide range of components from the vast majority of herbal materials.

(5) Low Solvent Dependency: The process is largely independent of the properties (such as polarity) of both the solvent and the target compounds, allowing for a wider choice of solvents and a broader range of extractable targets.

(6) Reduced Energy Consumption: Significantly lower energy usage is achieved due to minimal or no heating and shorter processing times.

(7) High Throughput and Purity: It allows for much larger batches of raw herb processing, often increasing capacity severalfold. The extracts contain fewer impurities, making the active components easier to separate and purify.

(8) Low Operational Costs and Significant Economic Benefits: The extraction process is cost-effective, delivering substantial overall economic advantages.
